Apostillation of documents

Are you going to work as a doctor in another European Union country? You will probably need to submit documents related to your medical license practiced in Slovakia, such as diplomas of graduation, certificates of specialisation, certificates of state examination, licence to practise as a professional representative, certificates of the Slovak Medical Chamber, criminal record, birth certificate, etc. You will need to submit apostillation of documents.

An apostille is required in case of using a document issued in Slovakia for use abroad. Apostille of a document means verification by the authority that issued the document in Slovakia that it had the authority to issue the document.

The apostille is issued in the official language of the state of issue of the document, so an official translation of the document is usually required for use abroad.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic defines apostillation of documents as authentication of Slovak documents for the needs of foreign authorities. Thanks to this document authentication, public documents acquire legal force in another country, i.e. on the basis of apostille, the official abroad can be sure that the document you are presenting to him/her is not false and was actually issued by the authority authorised to issue the document in question.

Such a document will then facilitate the use of official documents in the state other than that in which the documents were issued. If official documents have documentary apostille, they do not need to be authenticated by super-legalization. Public documents acquire legal force and authenticity through apostille even in a state in which they were not originally issued. Only the authority superior to the authority which issued the original document has the right to issue an apostille in Slovakia.

When is apostille required?

Not all official translations require apostille. Apostillation of documents is only necessary if a specific authority or institution requests it from you. Therefore, always check with the specific office where you are required to submit the document that you are required to apostille any document that has been translated.  If the document has been requested by an office or institution in a country that has not signed the Apostille Agreement and does not have a bilateral agreement with Slovakia, in this case apostilisation of the documents will not be sufficient, but super-legalization.
